When Chloe gets a job working with children struggling in class, 8 year old Mario and Nini stand out. She encourages them to make a documentary and they choose gang culture as a theme. But as the bonds between them grow, the emotional stakes get higher as the boys slide towards a life of crime. Filmed over 7 years, this disturbing documentary takes a fly on the wall view of the shaping of young minds in a world where childhood no longer exists.
’Nini stop talking!’ the voice of an exasperated teacher cuts through a bustling classroom. ‘I will fight you’, 8 year old Mario shouts across the room. Mario and Nini both struggle with reading and writing, find it hard to concentrate and are becoming cheeky. When Chloe teaches them separately, they’re excited to open up to the camera about their feelings. 'Are we the stupidest kids in the school?’ they ask giggling. But Chloe isn’t always there. ‘Why was I being good in the first place?’, Mario asks in tears when he is banned from the school trip. ‘I'll be bad I don’t care. I’m struggling and miss wants me to be perfect. Forget this’.
Age 10 - ‘Yesterday my teacher said ‘I’m never coming back to this school again', Mario admits sadly. ‘I was out of control, just out of control’’. Mario and Nini’s parents frequently receive phone calls from the school. But Mario’s parents are more worried about the friends he hangs out with at night on the street. ‘To tell the truth it feels good. It makes me feel like I’m special’ Mario says.
Age 11 - ‘How did you feel about the murders in your area?’ Mario asks Nini. ‘I thought ‘what is my area turning into?’ says Nini. ‘My friend got stabbed six times over a fake £20 note’. Chloe encourages the boys to continue with their documentary. So the boys introduce Chloe to their ‘crew’. ‘One time, one of the ‘olders’ wanted us to knock out one guy so they gave us £20’ says one 11 year old. Whilst the so-called ‘older’ gang members admit that ‘first it’s not crime, it’s just fun. But once you’re in, it’s your group of friends, it’s your life’.
Age 13 - ‘'I’m feeling like I’ve lost you both now,’ Chloe says as the boys laugh and swear instead of editing their documentary. ‘Stick and twist’ Nini says sticking his flick knife into a can of 7up ‘that’s what you do with a body’. Horrified, Chloe takes the boys and a friend camping. ‘I've never been on a big hike before!’ says Nini’s friend. ‘You have to go 10 miles for a police station!’', they cry astonished, excitedly eating berries from a bush. But it’s time to return to the city, where there’s ‘so much pressure on us’ .
‘When we were camping I was happy because I could just be myself. I was free ’, Mario says. ‘If you’re not there to talk to it’s all crammed inside me. All the hate. And I always try to show love. But love will get you killed’ Mario says without flinching, ‘that’s one thing I know…love will get you killed’.
Mario and Nini now both hope to join the military. But their words are a chilling portrait of the state of innocence today.

Posted: Sep 12 2009, 23:51Report AbuseI think Mario said it all during the camping weekend; parents NEED to raise their own children! Parents need to give their children the love, acceptance and the respect they crave. They need to teach their children that you don't have to have all the latest material things and that education is still the key. Above all they need to teach their children what sin is; life is not about the survival of the fittest!

Great insight into the tragedy of our urban youth. I say our, as in the great OUR, Mankind's Our. This is a story no different to millions of others, be it London, Paris, Los Angeles, Sydney or any other big city. These misfits represent the undeveloped underbelly of our great developed nations and cities.

Posted: Jan 13 2010, 20:47Report AbusePeople need to learn how to raise kids. I only looked at the parents and I already knew they must be horrible parents. Kids don't act out for nothing. They are raised badly with parents that spank or yell all the time and show no love. These are the only issues people need to solve - annoying parents. Or just give a psychiatrist to children. Maybe they were abused. Or maybe they just want attention, so they act out to get something. Or maybe it's their culture. The way they speak can already tell you something. I can't understand anything that british kids say. This isn't english, it's gibberish. I won't watch the rest of it.

Posted: Jun 08 2010, 09:16Report AbuseThis documentry is so good, it displays the real problems of today, which focuses on problems in england not some in african country like normal, it really does show that we have a big problem. Gun crime in england has increased over 25% and rising and it will be a epodemic soon, more and more gangs in london and all over not just in london birmingham is increasing and liverpool. Soon police will have to start carrying guns around the streets to be safe of gangs, knives were a huge problem but now its going to be a even bigger problem with guns. But i hugely understand the stress some people in cities in the bad areas have to under go to be safe, i know that anyone would carry a knife or a gun to be safe and not be mugged or killed, any normal person would, what i think we have to do a society is not have a 40 year old man going round the streets trying to introduce youth programs, but get 20 year olds or 30 year old, people that they are going to relate to and see as role models, this will provide kids staying out of the streets and areas where no kid should be around. The people which have to do this, is the experiance people which have lead this life and come around, there is no good having some rich old man trying to change them because its not going to happen, they will just laugh at them. And the gun crime, well its never ending problem becasue anyone can get hold of a gun if they want, but what people have to know is that they carnt get the guns off the streets that are already there, it woudl never work. What we havre to do is try and get the people with these guns to not use them and stop any other weapons to enter the streets. And the problem of knifes well, we will never get rid of them because its a every day house hold thing. What i think we can do is improve talking in schools, to explain what will happen if they get caught with a gun or a knife on them which will, help alot beacause alot of the youth dont think abotu it and the future. In conclusion we as society have to take this problem into account and take care of it, because if we leave it, it is going to get even worse like it is in america !
